Tell us a little about yourself.

When I was 10 years old, my mom and I relocated to Boston from NYC seeking better educational opportunities. The Latino community is associated with high school dropouts and teen pregnancy, and I wanted to prove these stereotypes wrong. Unfortunately, my parents couldn’t afford to pay for college, but I was determined to figure it out. I did. I graduated. The lack of diversity in tech led me to pursue a career in corporate operations and community engagement. After interacting with colleagues in my last tech company, I became convinced that software engineering is the path for me.

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about supporting underrepresented communities. This is one of the reasons why I decided to become a coder. I am a Latinx coder and hope to show others that look like me can do the same. I also love traveling and exploring new places, food, and culture. I’m always looking forward to the next adventure to continue seeing the world!

What was your journey like to get where you are today?

I started my career at the Federal Reserve Bank, where I managed the relationship between stakeholders and customers. After the Reserve Bank, I transitioned to working at a nonprofit and helped a local business reopen into a center that supports low-income families. Ever since then, I’ve been on a pursuit to find the right path, and after discovering Resilient Coders, I decided to quit my tech job. After months of endless nights learning to code, I was proud to present my passion project during the Resilient Coders Demo Day. My project is a full-stack application that provides users with a surprise destination based on the region selected. I look forward to seeing what the future brings next.

What drew you to Resilient Coders?

I loved the community, mission, and support at RC. I don’t believe that there is any other program that compares to it. Additionally, I knew that at RC, I will gain the skills needed to grow as an engineer.

Where do you see yourself in 1-2 years?

I see myself working at a SaaS company where I can continue growing as an engineer and making the most significant impact. I also hope my story encourages others to consider a possible career in coding.

Any final words of wisdom that you want to give to the STEAM Boston community?

Keep learning and surround yourself with a community that pushes you and believes in you.

What’s your favorite spot in Boston?

Yvonne’s! I love their ambiance, food, and delicious drinks!
